The music on this Savoy release has Lester "Pres" (or President of the saxophone) playing in three seperate groups from three different dates. Among the personnel is Count Basie on Piano, Freddie Green on guitar, and a young Roy Haynes on drums. This is straight ahead jazz from the late 40's/5(10).

“Count Basie took the Kansas City blues and made it happy,” Tony Bennett once remarked, perhaps summing up the enduring appeal that makes a collection like the eight-CD Classic Count Basie and Lester Young Studio Sessions the Lord’s work.

Young plays a fine opening solo and he plays great exchanges with Basie, but that’s basically all that this performance has in common with the “Lester Leaps In”. The tempo is slower in than 5 years earlier, and the harmonic progression was “I Got Rhythm” in and a bar blues on the “remake”.
