This is intellectual big band that still swings. Mulligan is great, but so is Brookmeyer on valve trombone. I have this on the original Verve LP and it is nice to have on CD as backup. Mulligan also plays piano and clarinet. Do not miss this granilargardajindforcerunner.xyzinfos: 3.

Mulligan continually experimented with new formats for his music, which was perhaps best exemplified by his work with his Concert Jazz Band. The initial LP by the Concert Jazz Band, reissued here, was recorded during three sessions/5(18).

Gerald Joseph Mulligan (April 6, – January 20, ) was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger. Though primarily known as one of the leading jazz baritone saxophonists—playing the instrument with a light and airy tone in the era of cool jazz—Mulligan was also a significant arranger, working with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and others.

Gerry Mulligan's fourth album to feature his Concert Jazz Band comes from a series of concerts taped in the latter half of The loping blues "Go Home," written by Ben Webster for his record date with Mulligan, is heard in two contrasting performances, both arranged by Bill Holman. The first features Mulligan on both baritone sax and piano, while he omits piano from the second version.

The CD being reviewed is not the same as the real first album simply titled "The Concert Jazz Band." Instead, it has about seven additional tracks including a few live performances. It would be great if someone would package the complete output of The Concert Jazz Band in a boxed set but until that's available, this CD is definitely worth the /5(18).
