Barbirolli's interpretation, though, is a fine one. Rubbra once said that conductors tended to take his music too fast and Barbirolli certainly starts this work with a true lento. The sixth symphony is taken from a recording taken from Rubbra's own private collection and made available for this CD by Adrian Yardley, the composer's son.

The music of Arnold Bax, E.J. Moeran, Edmund Rubbra, John Ireland, Gustav Holst, George Butterworth and many others thus became available in first class recordings, and I eagerly collected them all. Among the Lyrita recordings offered by MHS was Rubbra's Seventh Symphony conducted by Adrian Boult, which makes up the second half of this Lyrita cd.5/5(4).
