If You Were in My Place exhibits the band's precision, with a sequence of very fast staccato notes from the brass. Mood Indigo may seem hackneyed by now but Ellington's piano chorus and the following richly-orchestrated section work make it fresh. East St Louis Toodle-Oo is used as a recurrent theme but it is typical of Ellington that all its appearances are different.

The latter was also a celebration of Duke’s birthday, of which there were many more to come. The second CD has a brief but engaging newsreel clip that shows Harlem’s Lenox Avenue and looks into the club for a glimpse of Ellington, the orchestra, and some of the famous Cotton Club dancing beauties. Nostalgia? Yes, but so much more.

This CD contains most, not all, of the recordings known to have been made at the Cotton Club between the 24th of March and the 5th of July They are on site radio broadcasts and not, for the most part, true "live" recordings. Nonetheless they exude the enthousiasm and spontaneity which sometimes marks live performances.5/5(1).

The Ellington band left The Cotton Club in February to begin a tour that, in a sense, would not end until the leader's death 43 years later. At the same time, Ellington scored a Top Five hit with an instrumental version of one of his standards, "Mood Indigo" released on Victor. The recording was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Feb 07,  · Johnny Hodges I first knowingly encountered Duke Ellington's music while searching for more tenor and alto sax related music = Johnny Hodges, and really enjoyed all that I heard, plus a number of songs sounded familiar and for good reason. The All Star Road Band cds, Volumes 1 & 2, pulled me in and hearing/reading about some of the behind the scenes interplay it is fun to imagine Duke .
